From the February 12, 1966 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

While medical physicians often admit that thought plays a part in the sickness of a patient, they do not give up their belief in a material basis of his bodily disturbance. This conviction leads to physical diagnosis and to material remedies.

Contrary to this method of handling a case of sickness, the Christian Scientist diagnoses a physical disorder as altogether a mental state, and he applies Christian Science as divine law, working to bring the thought of his patient into obedience to God. When this is accomplished, the body responds accordingly and the case is successfully healed. God’s law rather than material belief claiming to be law is in control of the patient’s thought, and the body, being nonintelligent and nonthinking, cannot resist this control.

In applying divine law for the benefit of his patient, the Scientist is alert to detect the specific material beliefs involved in a case. And he opposes these troublesome beliefs as vigorously as a lawyer would oppose false evidence brought against his client.

Mary Baker Eddy says in “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (p. 390), “‘Agree to disagree’ with approaching symptoms of chronic or acute disease, whether it is cancer, consumption, or smallpox.” Later she continues, “Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of Truth to overthrow the plea of mortal mind, alias matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit.”

Sickness does not strike the real man, who, as Christian Science reveals, is God’s perfect likeness, never capable of disobedience to divine law, never controlled by any other force. This standpoint of perfection should not become hazy in the Scientist’s healing argument.

In order to handle a case of illness effectively, the Scientist should be skillful in detecting the wiles of mortal mind and in seeing where its strengths as well as its weaknesses seem to be. In this way he knows where to build the strengths of his own argument and how to forestall what might seem to be lawful, but is not.

It is not enough for the Scientist to know the arguments of innocence he must employ in defending his patient; he must identify the claims of error specifically in order to expose it as godless and as powerless to oppose his plea for justice that destroys evil and its effects. This procedure in no way gives reality to sickness but handles error’s belief in its own reality.

Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 252), “A knowledge of error and of its operations must precede that understanding of Truth which destroys error, until the entire mortal, material error finally disappears, and the eternal verity, man created by and of Spirit, is understood and recognized as the true likeness of his Maker.”

Abraham Lincoln was an astute lawyer who knew how to analyze his opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, and this gave him advantage in the legal cases he handled. In “The Lincoln Reader,” edited by Paul M. Angle, we read of the training Lincoln received under his onetime partner, Judge Stephen T. Logan, of Illinois, a great lawyer of his day. Adopting Judge Logan’s methods, Lincoln “examined the law both of his side and that of his opponent. We have his own statement for the fact that he was never thereafter surprised by the strength of an opponent’s case. By analyzing it he often found it weaker than he first feared.”

The Christian Scientist will not be surprised by mortal mind’s assertions of strength if he thoroughly deals with its basic claims: that life is in matter; that man is a helpless mortal; that death can strike unexpectedly; that there are laws of matter which God cannot cope with; that the patient’s courage is likely to give way if healing does not come quickly.

If the Scientist emphasizes the healing of pain, swelling, and other superficial symptoms in his prayerful affirmations to the neglect of the seemingly stronger and more deeply entrenched beliefs of life in matter and the influence of general belief, he is working from a weak position. He is not separating the identity of his patient from the universal evils which appear to give strength to the side of sickness.

One of mortal mind’s claims to strength rests upon its belief in material laws. We attack sickness at this entrenched point when we deny error’s claim to oppose God’s will—the real, governing law of the universe. We cannot forget the emphasis the Master, Christ Jesus, placed upon divine law, from his support of the law of Moses and the new law of Love he announced (see John 13:34) to his statement of full subjection to God’s will, when he said (John 6:38), “I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”

Herein lies the strength of Christian Science—to inspire us to conform to the divine will. And herein lies the vulnerability of the argument of the carnal mind— that it can reverse the divine will and produce conditions that defy that will.

Sickness is mental, and thus it must be handled. To keep this point in mind strengthens the Scientist in his healing work. It helps him to silence every suggestion that error can surprise him or that matter can either aid or hinder his proving the power of divine law to completely overturn evil’s claim to govern mankind.

Love Never Condemns

Love never judges nor condemns, never arraigns nor censures.
Not a word!

Love never imparts an unclean or unkind expression. Love never expresses a doubt or a fear.
Love never utters a disparaging remark of another.

As you would have others love, so do ye.
Pause, in the consciousness of Love with us!
Be still! Not a word, emphatically, not even a look, that will mar the sweet serenity of love.

Know God, divine Love.
Keep silent in humility before Love.

Not a word of murmuring or complaining in supplication; not a word of nagging or persuading – silence the senses.
Let the language of Love be simple, gentle, quiet;

you utter not a word, but give Love opportunity to speak. Harken to Love’s voice.
This is the way to honor and to know Love .
Not a word – not the last word.
Listen to obey and live Love. Human words make trouble.

Be still with grace. This is the voice of Love.
We need take no thought for tomorrow, — nor worry not about home, church or business cares.
Because we cast all on Love, and speak not a word.
Human sense thinks so hard, prays so hard, and trusts so little. Then let us simply love because we know the love of Love.

They then named everything they could think of in connection with the Church activities. But Mrs. Eddy smiled and quietly answered, ‘No, that is not the most important

work.’ ‘Why, we have named everything,’ they said. ‘Yes, you have named everything except the most important work I could do – to serve on the Lesson Committee. You see, our text-book is complete, – a chapter on healing, one on
teaching – and so on. The book alone, will revolutionize the world’s thinking. But in active work – to prepare 52 lessons on 26 subjects – this is giving the world weekly treatments – surrounding it with the spoken word, 24 hours on
Sunday.’ They were amazed, so Mrs. Eddy added. ‘why, you girls don’t think you go to church to worship God as we used to, do you? Our God isn’t to be worshipped, but expressed.’ (…‘neither is worshipped, as though He needed anything, seeing He giveth to all life and breath and all things.’ Acts 17:25) ‘We study these lessons for six days,’ she continued, then we go to Church to

express God for the world – to give the world a treatment.’ (S&H 583:14 Definition of Church) ‘The first subjects of the lessons are on God – His synonyms, attributes, etc. – the fundamental teaching of Christian Science. Then come the subjects that are for the purpose of healing the world. The prayers offered in Church are for
the purpose of helping the organization do its work to express God.'”

By Patricia Hardee / February 14, 2012

“All you need is love,” says a 1960s Beatles’ song. It’s still popular – you might even be singing it right now.
“All you need is love, all you need is love/ All you need is love, love, love is all you need.” It’s an easy lyric. Songwriters John Lennon and Paul McCartney included the word “love” about 40 times in the song.
In taking a closer look at the lyrics, I found a surprise. The song is not simply about romantic love, as the chorus might suggest. To me the verses carry a deeply spiritual message. I see a message about Love as the divine ever-presence that spiritual thinkers know Love to be. How else could they say about love: “It’s easy”?
Consider this verse:

There’s nothing you can know that isn’t known
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown
Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be.
It’s easy.
All you need is love …

The thought in this verse reminds me that Love is God, and that’s why all good is already provided and will ever be available to all. This is what makes loving easy and natural. Some people with relationship wrinkles might disagree. To them, love may not seem so easy. Some may even say that love hurts.

But Mary Baker Eddy, who founded the Monitor, wrote this profound statement about Love and human needs in the Christian Science textbook: “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need” (“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” p.
494). Every need? When I first read this, I thought, How can she say that when there’s so much evidence of human need all around, especially the need for love?
But after a closer study of Science and Health, I learned that God’s law of love is ever in
operation (just as the law of mathematics is always in operation: 2+2 always equals 4), but to be experienced, it must be acknowledged and embraced. From Love’s vantage point every need is already met, but for us to enjoy this humanly, we must realize it consciously, as Jesus did.

For Jesus, loving was easy. The Master said our Father met his every need, that he did nothing of himself – that it was always the Father working through him (see John 5:19). This conscious recognition of his oneness with God, divine Love, is what made loving easy for him. Jesus wouldn’t have seen himself as lacking love.

Not one of us can lack love, either. But if we think of love as simply a variable human emotion, we may think we do lack love, and may suffer as if we are needy. But true love, which comes from God, is never limited. When we think it is limited, we limit loving, and that’s when love can seem to hurt. But we cannot suffer from lack of love when we recognize divine Love as the ever-present source of our very being and when we allow divine affection to be expressed through each of us humanly.

What if we do let love pour through, but affection is not returned? We can surely take heart. Love is never wasted. Mrs. Eddy wrote: “Human affection is not poured forth vainly, even
though it meet no return. Love enriches the nature, enlarging, purifying, and elevating it” (p. 57).
How do we recognize divine Love? Love appears as tangible evidence of the ever-present divine influence, appropriately expressed humanly. It is contentment meant to be. It is joy, welling up from within and urging heartfelt happiness. It will burst out as song. You will know it as it has always been known. You will see it as it has always been shown. You will love it as you have always been loved.

LOUISE KNIGHT WHEATLEY

From the October 1908 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There was a time when in my daily prayer
I asked for all the things I deemed most fair,
And necessary to my life,—success,
Riches, of course, and ease, and happiness;
A host of friends, a home without alloy;
A primrose path of luxury and joy,
Social distinction, and enough of fame
To leave behind a well-remembered name. Ambition ruled my life. I longed to do
Great things, that all my little world might view
And whisper, “Wonderful!”
Ah, patient God,
How blind we are, until Thy shepherd’s rod
Of tender chastening gently leads us on
To better things! To-day I have but one
Petition, Lord—Teach me to love. Indeed,
It is my greatest and my only need —
Teach me to love, not those who first love me,
But all the world, with that rare purity
Of broad, outreaching thought which bears no trace Of earthly taint, but holds in its embrace
Humanity, and only seems to see
The good in all, reflected, Lord, from Thee.
And teach me, Father, how to love the most
Those who most stand in need of love— that host Of people who are sick and poor and bad,

Whose tired faces show their lives are sad,
Who toil along the road with footsteps slow,
And hearts more heavy than the world can know— People whom others pass discreetly by,
Or fail to hear the pleading of that cry
For help, amid the tumult of the crowd;
Whose very anguish makes them cold and proud, Resentful, stubborn, bitter in their grief—
I want to bring them comfort and relief,
To put my hand in theirs, and at their side
Walk softly on, a faithful, fearless guide.
O Saviour, thou the Christ, Truth, ever near,
Help me to feel these sad ones doubly dear Because they need so much! Help me to seek
And find that which they thought was lost; to speak Such words of cheer that as we pass along
The wilderness shall blossom into song.
Ah, Love divine, how empty was that prayer
Of other days! That which was once so fair,— Those flimsy baubles which the world calls joys
Are nothing to me now but broken toys,
Outlived, outgrown. I thank Thee that I know
Those much-desired dreams of long ago,
Like butterflies, have had their summer’s day
Of brief enchantment, and have gone. I pray
For better things.
Thou knowest, God above,
My one desire now—Teach me to love.

If we believe security and companionship comes from a husband or wife

We must discover that “…thy maker is thy husband”…(Isa 54:5)
And rest (trust) assured (confident) in the ever-presence of Love and its ability to husband us or be our helpmate. This Principle, which is Love, provides us with companionship, supply and security.

If we believe our health and stamina comes from a set of numbers designating age, weight, blood pressure, temperature, etc, or a regimen of diet or exercise

We must discover divine Principle. God’s law is in our inward parts (Jer. 31:33) – an internal, regulative power. Our normal bodily activity is the effect of this law.

Then we rest assured that we actively express health. We can be certain that our energy can never lessen because it is a timeless, inexhaustible expression of perfect Life.

If we believe employment or supply comes from a personality known as a boss or a set of personalities known as a company or customers

We must discover that God is our employer. There is an unvarying Principle that the Godlike qualities we express (faithfulness, leadership, intelligence, integrity and innovation) demonstrate fidelity to God and generate gratitude. This appreciation of our goodness humanly appears as salary or payment. It increases as we grow in grace.

Then we will be sure that we can rely – rest in conviction — that Principle is our constant, continuous source of employment and provision.

If we believe that our joy comes from the presence of certain friends or the love of our parents or children

We must discover that God is our Father-Mother, teacher, companion, physician, friend, pastor, practitioner, our ever-present help. Principle shows us we are included in the whole family of man, constantly beloved, cherished, understood and appreciated.

Our expanded sense of family will then enable us to rest – be ever conscious – in the assurance that we are never alone, always all-one with all of God’s wonderful ideas and being companioned by them. Our happiness is then secure and permanent.

References from The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy

Mis 114:26
Rest assured that God in His wisdom will test all mankind on all questions; and then, if found faithful, He will deliver us from temptation and show us the powerlessness of evil, — even its utter nothingness.

Mis 160:13
Of this we rest assured, that every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger and firmer in understanding and obedience.

Mis 276:5-9
I did not hold interviews with all with whom I desired to, solely because so many people and circumstances demanded my attention that my personality was not big enough to fill the order; but rest assured my heart’s desire met the demand.

Ret 85:9
Of this also rest assured, that books and teaching are but a ladder let down from the heaven of Truth and Love, upon which angelic thoughts ascend and descend, bearing on their pinions of light the Christ-spirit.

’01 1:1-6
Beloved brethren, to-day I extend my heart-and-hand-fellowship to the faithful, to those whose hearts have been beating through the mental avenues of mankind for God and humanity; and rest assured you can never lack God’s outstretched arm so long as you are in His service.

My 139:2
Beloved Students: — Rest assured that your Leader is living, loving, acting, enjoying.

My 151:12
Rest assured that the injustice done by press and pulpit to this denomination of Christians will cease, when it no longer blesses this denomination.

My 186:13
Rest assured that He in whom dwelleth all life, health, and holiness, will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory.

My 252:8-10
Rest assured that the good you do unto others you do to yourselves as well, and the wrong you may commit must, will, rebound upon you.

A Psalm of David. Amplified Bible

1 The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, guide, and shield me], I shall not lack.

2 He makes me lie down in [fresh, tender] green pastures; He leads me beside the still and restful waters.

3 He refreshes and restores my life (my self); He leads me in the paths of righteousness [uprightness and right standing with Him—not for my earning it, but] for His name’s sake.

4 Yes, though I walk through the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with [a]oil; my [brimming] cup runs over.

6 Surely or only goodness, mercy, and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, and through the length of my days the house of the Lord [and His presence] shall be my dwelling place.

a. Psalm 23:5 It is difficult for those living in a temperate climate to appreciate, but it was customary in hot climates to anoint the body with oil to protect it from excessive perspiration. When mixed with perfume, the oil imparted a delightfully refreshing and invigorating sensation. Athletes anointed their bodies as a matter of course before running a race. As the body, therefore, anointed with oil was refreshed, invigorated, and better fitted for action, so the Lord would anoint His “sheep” with the Holy Spirit, Whom oil symbolizes, to fit them to engage more freely in His service and run in the way He directs—in heavenly fellowship with Him.

“Love is the Father, who is strong in His care for His children and provides for every need. Love feeds, clothes, and shelters every one of His dear ones. Love is a Mother tenderly brooding over all her children. This Mother guards each one from harm, nourishes, holds close to Herself, and carefully leads along the upward way. Love is a Shepherd who goes forth into the darkness of night, into the storm and wind, to find the lost sheep. This shepherd of Love leaves the beaten path, searches the wood and marsh, pushes aside the brambles and seeks until the lost is found; the He places it within His bosom and returns to heal and restore.” – Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy by Irving Tomlinson, amplified version.
